We just purchased quite a few of the "When I Feel" series. I wish I knew about them sooner. My 3.5yr old seems slightly too old for the repetition in this book and he gets bored of it. However, he's getting the right messsage and he has been practicing the solutions in the book. I just wish we would have started it a year ago when he first started expressing the feelings covered in the book.Basically, the book covers "I feel angry when...." "When I feel angry, it feels like..." "These are the things I can do when I feel angry so I don't feel angry anymore". It's a great book! But I would recommend starting around age 2.
My toddler will be turning 3 soon. This book has really helped her Express her anger in a safe and healthy way. Toddlers get so frustrated at times because they still can't communicate exactly their needs or feelings. We still read this book almost weekly and she loves it. It's really been a help for us.
After one day of reading this book, my 3 year old has been understanding his "hot" angry feelings and working to not hurt others with his angry actions. It's a great book with a lot of situations where one could relate to feeling angry. Hopefully continued reading will continue to help adjust the angry terrible twos and threes outbursts our passionate little one has.
I bought this for my 4 year old to help facilitate discussion about appropriate ways to handle anger and it's really helped. I love that this books goes through triggers (hurt feelings, disappointment, frustration), the things you want to do when you're angry (yell, hit, say something mean), and then gives good alternatives (leave the situation, deep breaths and blow them out, exercise, doing something fun, rest, cry, time alone, ask for help, talking and listening). It's a very cute book and I think my son could really relate and has gotten better about talking about his feelings instead of just throwing tantrums. It's also helped me to remind him in the moment of better ways to handle his feelings. Sometimes it is so apparent how overwhelming feelings can be at this age and it's nice to feel like I have something to offer him to help him deal with them.
When I Feel Angry is part of a series of books written by a child psychologist to help children identify and understand their emotions. We have others in the series, including When I Miss You, When I Feel Scared, and When I Care About Others, but the book about anger is the one I turn to most often. The text talks about anger in a non-judgmental fashion, speaks matter-of-factly about several situations that could reasonably make a child angry, describes what the emotion itself feels like, and most importantly, offers several suggestions for what my daughter can do to handle her anger other than saying something mean, yelling, or hitting. The fact that the illustrations show a bunny rather than a little girl somehow depersonalizes the discussion so that we can talk about managing anger objectively, without making my child feel as though she is in the wrong.Does it help? I can't speak for my daughter, but it does help me. My daughter is funny, smart, and so verbally precocious that it is easy to forget that she's only four. Four-year-olds, even verbally precocious ones, are still building their tool chests for dealing with anger and other emotional fallout from life's setbacks. really liked this book. it gives tangible solutions for when your little ones are angry. describes anger very well and in kid friendly terms. we have implemented their recommendations and it is working on our toddler tantrums
I bought this for my 3 year old nephew who sometimes has trouble controlling his temper. He absolutely LOVED this book. He made me read it over and over again. He seemed to really "relate" to the main character. His older sister, 9, also really liked it. Great book.
This book has given my almost three year old daughter many different techniques for working through the big feelings of being angry or upset about something. Deep breathing, playing by yourself, sitting and having some quiet, going for a walk; all are options presented by this book. I enjoy the art and the rabbit characters are relate-able and their emotions easy to decipher from the illustrations. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a young child in their life because it helps kids cope with their feelings in constructive ways that become second nature when read to the child often enough.
