This is a review of the audio book. I'm a longtime fan of Chuck Palahniuk's writing, so the bad reviews didn't deter me. I'm glad I didn't let them sway me, because this is a great, wild, crazy, whacky, out-there, funny satire on gender politics. The pornographic bits could have been toned down for my taste, but hey - when you read CP, you know he never tones anything down! The reader of the audiobook (which is very low-priced!) is fantastic. She really brings you into the story. CP's writing, as ever, is razor sharp and thought-provoking.
I have to agree with a lot of the other reviewers on this one. I noticed that a lot of others mentioned that they like other Palahnik books but this one was a little too much for them. I think that what makes this one different is that with the others there is a payoff in the end or a point where it all seems to come together. This does not seem to be the case with this book. It is just a very implausible story about an encounter with a sociopathic business mogul into sadistic sex. I found myself numbed to the action in the book halfway through and dare I say even more disengaged than the Maxwell character was in his sessions with the main character. This has the feeling of a half-baked idea that was just filled in to make a page count but where the author did not bother to developed the characters any. i give it three stars because I get a sense of what the author was trying to do through parody of modern society but I think that it is horribly executed.
this is a story that someone needed to write. i guess it makes sense from chuck p, but it is far from his best work. be forewarned that this story is gross and not sexy.
Palahniuk is my all time favorite author, from the gritty Fight Club to the brutally honest Stranger Than Fiction nonfiction work he's written. He allows a sense of connection and understanding-and more importantly complete dedication and devotion to the story, history and mystery behind what most either consider taboo or uncomfortable. He takes you there, makes you squirm with every paragraph, sentence and well placed word to keep you entranced and sometimes disgusted as he says what everyone thinks-humankind is depraved, carnal and disturbed. It's fascinating and beautifully written every time from every character perspective possible.
I love Palahnuik books and will read him even if they are a mess of chicken scratch, dog nuggets, and promoted as flashcards for the blind. That said, I'm not crazy about this one but I give him huge props for doing what very few men have attempted. Ever. This could be completely inaccurate but I felt like he took a huge chunk of the romance novel genre, put it in a blender and drank it each morning for six months to emulate the tone and gland-clogging sexual spree given over to those who love deliciously smutty bodice-rippers. Since I'm one of those people and those books taught me the joy and love of reading (sometimes at 2 AM just to get to that next sex scene), I'm impressed with CP's first sex scene. He didn't exactly "nail" the female brain on romance but he satirized it in a way I could still get off on.
I am a huge Chuck Palahniuk fan and I have all of his books. But I found this book to be so incredibly stupid I couldn't even force myself to finish it.
Palahniuk is one of my all time favorite authors, I have read and loved most of his work. This, however, is garbage. It has a weird, wobbling plot line and lack of his trademark clever, thought provoking banter. I don't know what happened here, there were some serious misogynistic undertones that went past his usual satire. This novel tries way too hard to be "shocking" and just ends up being boring and repetitive. I should have read the reviews before purchasing.
One of my favorite authors writes absolutely the stupidest most poorly written waste of time. I had to skip to the end to find out that the end was just as bad as the rest of the "book"
