Okay. A little sciency and not as easy to follow as I was hoping. Still good as a reference source, but if you're a novice gem hunter 'Smithsonian Handbooks: Rocks & Minerals (Smithsonian Handbooks)' is a much better book to start with.
I got this book for my fiance who is an avid gem collector and aspires to become a gemologist. He absolutely loved the book, read it in one night! The pictures are out of this world, it almost looks like you're looking at real gems. Very informational! I would suggest that anyone interested in gems get this book. You start learning once you open the front cover.
I found this book to be very helpful. I use it to help me understand and determine the value and marketability of the jewelry I import for sale, especially the section on the "new" gems currently on the market today. The author gives a history of gemstones, how they are mined or manufactured, where they fit in the mineral world, and what tests need to be done to determine whether they are genuine.
I was so appalled when I opened this book! I bought 2 of the 5 revisions of Mr. Schumann's book because it was the best of all the reference books I tried. I was looking for one that was a thorough, but quick guide to gemstones and this one met all my criteria. This book is a printing disaster! All the photographs are too dark, and the colors in some have been enhanced until they are not even the true colors of the stones! Whomever contrated with this printing company needs to send all these books back to them, and get their money back! A ruination of an excellent resource book!

One of the best books on gemstones that I have ever found. No metaphysical information, but all the physical and historical you can find in any book. Beautiful pictures.
Fascinating and comprehensive guide to gemstones. It's easy to see why this is considered the industry standard by gemstone collectors and professional gemologists.
Compared with 1990. edition, this edition is expanded with 18 pages of a new stones for collectors, more data are added in many tables and what is very important - section about synthetic stones is more detailed (10 pages).It's very nice that here are 6 pages with a lot of New stones on the market.What I don't like is a new section about horoscop and healing, but this new-age concept is very popular and many people will like that.Great book if you are interested in gemstones.
