From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Saitama is a young hero who has reached his boredom threshold. He is so powerful that he can now defeat anyone with one punch, and he doesn't feel challenged anymore. Saitama is too strong for his own good, identifying himself as someone who is "a hero for fun," but he's no longer able to feel the emotional satisfaction earned by doing good deeds. Listless and unchallenged, the protagonist spends a lot of time fighting a wide variety of outlandish opponents who ridicule him for his bad attitude and because he's bald. The book is filled with over-the-top cartoony violence, and Murata's illustrations exude destructive energy. Readers are less likely to see blood and more likely to see something (or someone) blown to smithereens. In many ways, this story feels as though it was created inside the id of a 12-year-old boy who spent too much time playing with superhero and supervillain action figures. There isn't a lot of emotional development here, which is appropriate for a manga titled One-Punch Man. VERDICT The story is fast-paced, humorous, and entertaining in a way that looks and feels like an action movie.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

One Punch Man, Vol. 1 is the beginning of a former webcomic that went viral, getting over 10,000,000 hits. It's the story of a simple-faced (masked?) superhero, which as a manga reader, I found rather novel. Japan tends to humanize its heroes more than America does, which humanizes its heroes more than Mexico does. In Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, he draws a line between the "realistic" and the "iconic," and One Punch Man's face is what McCloud would call iconic, along the lines of Jeff Smith's Bone or Herge's Tin-Tin, both of which feature simple-faced characters surrounded by detailed landscapes. If you like that style, welcome to One Punch Man.The action starts with a battle that - predictably - ends with one punch, before going back in time three years to a humorous escapade which ends up with the main character's first battle against a monster. See, each chapter is called "Punch 1" or "Punch 2," and each chapter ends with him hitting a monster or enemy and stopping it with one punch. It reminds me of my old days in karate, where we sparred under "Ikken Hissatsu" rules, meaning, "one punch, one kill." Of course, we'd do best two out of three, so there was a zombie angle. For a manga with such humble origins, it has incredibly detailed artwork, most likely computer aided. I like how even the sound effects are redrawn in English. It's a very good, very funny manga that's a pleasure to read. The pages slip by very easily, reminiscent of One Piece. This is an excellent first issue, although the quality does seem to wax and wane. I'm going to read future volumes. The only question is whether I'll buy one every month or so, or buy every single one and try to power through them at $4.49 each on Kindle. Good. ****1/2
I've watched the anime for One-Punch Man and that's actually what got me to read the manga. Overall the anime did its job by retelling the story exactly as its laid out in the manga (the source material for the anime) which unfortunately made reading the manga short of boring as it was almost like watching reruns. Despite that as its no fault of the manga since I watched the anime version first so I won't hold it against it.The artwork is phenomenal and i just really love when Saitama is drawn as a serious fighter versus his normal basic silly look. The goal is to read all the mangas before season 2 comes out so I can see how well the anime does to matching the source material.
One Punch Man's fantastic. It indulges my (somewhat regrettable) desire for dumb shonen plot lines, while making fun of it and having a wonderfully satirical look at the world of heroes. Some of the jokes don't get translated over properly, which is a problem when bringing any comedy over from Japan (example: Mumen Rider is supposed to be a parody of Kamen Rider. Mumen meaning something similar to "license-less". I personally would have translated it to Powerless Ranger to keep the joke intact). Still, aside from that, it's not a BAD translation by any means. I highly recommend looking at this comic alongside ONE's original webcomic, to show what changes were made. It's really a lot of fun! http://galaxyheavyblow.web.fc2.com/
Yeah, the title here is all the summary you need. This is an amusing send up of action/Shounen manga, taking standard elements to their extremes and featuring a main character that has no equal and is so strong he’s bored. Outside of the over the top build up to fights completely described by the manga’s title, ridiculous amounts of emphasis are placed on odd things for comic effect both during the fights and when spotlighting One Punch Man’s past. His real worries are things like forgetting to do chores, side characters wear shirts labeling them generically (like one that reads “school childâ€), etc. The entire manga is built around how far absurdity can be pushed. One Punch Man is a good parody, although I don’t know how much I could read before the humor gets stale. Fun first volume though.
An amazing series about a guy, Saitama, who's become too strong. You might be thinking, "That can't be too bad." But when every fight ends in one punch, where's the fun or excitement? This series focuses on that aspect of the main character, But where it really shines is showing the effects Saitama has on the supporting cast, from a story sense. From an action-y comic book standpoint, it's got gratuitous violence pouring out of every orifice, with most enemies Saitama punches turning into nothing more than gory chunks. It might not be for you, due to the lack of suspense, but for me it's a great series. This first book is mostly for introducing the protagonist, Saitama.
One Punch Man is the best! It's definitely my favorite anime, and the manga is just as funny and immersive. When I read One Punch Man it makes me want to read more manga. This is one of the first series I picked up, and every time a new volume comes out I get more addicted. Saitama (the One Punch Man) is a wonderfully relatable protagonist. He cares so much, but he also doesn't care at all. He's meant to be overpowered and that's the whole joke. There is a comical lack of suspense when it comes to Saitama, but that's made up for by an extensive and dynamic cast of heroes who struggle where Saitama can't seem too. Saitama is a guy who worked hard to get where he is, but he still manages to seem like someone who fell ass-first in the hero gig. The art is great too, I want to tear the pages out and frame them! (I won't though, haha). I have all 7 volumes on my shelf, and I can't wait for the rest to come out.
